Whimsy 4: washday

washday

Ne’er cast a clout till May be out

This traditional saying tells us that we shouldn’t be mothballing our winter clothes until summer well and truly is here. But it doesn’t mean “wait till the month of May is over”, it means that once May or Hawthorn blossom is out — which is generally now — it’s Nature’s way of saying that winter is over. Barring the odd ground frost…

  1. I’ve only just stumbled upon your blog. I love the photographs and agree that it’s those little things that can lift your spirits each day. It’s so easy to do the same journeys day and day and not really notice our surroundings… on foot you see far more, details that you have never realised existed. Keep up the good work. 🙂

    1. What a lovely message! Thanks very much — I’m always hoping that my minutiae strike several chords in people’s experience of the world. I’ve long believed in “holiday consciousness” — a raised awareness of everyday things that you normally take for granted until you try to view them through a visitor’s eyes.

    1. Thanks, Dylan! (*Thinks* Thanks to Instagram for enriching the colours that my mobile couldn’t cope with! But they were if anything even richer in real life.)
