Sculpture 30: risen

angel3

Angels in St Edmunds churchyard, Crickhowell, Powys

Angelic figures are popularly represented on tombstones, no doubt because of the Gospel accounts describing such a figure appearing at Jesus’ tomb after the Resurrection.

As Mark describes it, Mary Magdalena, Mary the mother of James and Salome all went to prepare the body of Jesus. “And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.” The young man tells them “he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.”

The young man — who is usually identified as an angel — is mostly sculpted as mildly androgynous.
