Harlech Castle, Gwynedd, Wales
The march tune Gorhoffedd Gwŷr Harlech (“Men of Harlech”), first published 220 years ago, later appeared with lyrics in 1830. Traditionally the title alludes to the seven-year siege of Harlech Castle in the mid-fifteenth century.
The castle originally overlooked Cardigan Bay, with the sea approaching the cliffs on which the walls stand, but the coastline has since retreated further west. To the north the mountains of Snowdonia march down in ranks to the Irish Sea.
